The Cuyahoga County
Insurance Board (CCIB), established in 1927
and served its members with semi-monthly meetings
featuring interesting and topical subjects and
continuing education opportunities.
The first meeting of
"The Association of Insurance Agents in Cuyahoga
County" was held on November 29th 1927 at
The Hollenden Hotel in downtown Cleveland. From
the very first meeting, the interest of its members
has been addressed. At that first meeting it was
brought up that The Union Trust Company would
not accept Millers National Insurance Company
policies. By the next meeting on December 6th
a letter was read from Union Trust that due to
the Insurance Board's intervention, they would
now accept Millers National policies. The board
of directors and officers were nominated and elected
at that first meeting. Bylaws were established
by the 3rd meeting on 1/17/28 and the name of
the organization at that time was established
as the Board of Independent Fire Underwriters
of Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
On 11/19/28 the following
code of ethics was established: "(a) That
no agent connected with this Association shall
place his business with a company that maintains
a branch office, or a company whose direct representative
maintains an office directly or indirectly, which
said office solicits business direct or through
solicitors, being the opinion of all that the
best interest of the insurance business can be
obtained through the medium of the American Agency
System.
(b) That we will not
accept business from any person who is not licensed
to write fire insurance in the State of Ohio,
nor will we accept business from a licensed solicitor
of another fellow agents' office. In order that
the above provisions may be carried out successfully,
each agent shall file with the secretary the names
of all his solicitors, and all agents before accepting
business from solicitors indirectly connected
with their office and before licensing any new
agent, shall enquire of the secretary if such
is now or has in the past been connected with
any office."
On 3/27/30 a committee
reviewed a proposal by the Insurance Board of
Cleveland to consider a possible merger of the
two organizations. Then as now many members held
dual membership and our goals and interest of
our members was much the same. The principal reason
for not joining the Insurance Board of Cleveland
was admission fee of $200 plus a returnable deposit
of $200 upon withdrawing from the organization
plus the annual assessment of net premium written
to cover one's proportion of their annual expense.
Our dues at this time were only $10 per year.
A respectful no thanks was given and a pledge
"that we are always ready, at any time, to
co-operate with them in regard to anything relative
to the insurance business..."
On 9/2/37 an Executive
Secretary Burton P Faragher, Jr was appointed
at a salary of $30 per month.
By 10/27/38 our bylaws consisted of 8 pages including
a detailed Code of Business Principles. Dues were
$12 per year.
On 3/13/81 the Cuyahoga
County Insurance Board, Inc. was incorporated.
Bylaws were streamlined to the current 4 pages.
9/18/81 the CCIB donated
$2,000 to The Ohio Committee for Free Enterprise
Competition to help with the campaign to allow
competitive workers compensation.
On 11/13/85 the CCIB donated $1,000 to the PIA
National Justice Fund in their fight against legislation
allowing banks to sell insurance.
9/13/94 The first CCIB
Service Award was awarded to Jack Carson of Insurance
Diversified Agency for his service to the CCIB.
9/12/95 The CCIB Service
Award was presented to Joe Germana, Four Star
Insurance Agency Inc. for his service to the CCIB
and having served in his 12th consecutive term
as Secretary/Treasurer.
9/9/97 The CCIB Service
Award was presented to Jeff Neverman, Neverman
Insurance for his service to the CCIB.
5/8/01 The membership
approved a proposal to merge with the Insurance
Board of Greater Cleveland into a new organization
called the Insurance Board of Northern Ohio.
